DENPASAR, Indonesia: Seventeen passengers were injured Saturday (May 7) when a Hong Kong Airlines flight hit severe turbulence over Borneo after taking off from the Indonesian resort island of Bali, an airport official said.

The extreme weather forced Hong Kong-bound Flight CRK 6704 carrying 204 passengers and 12 crew to return to Denpasar.

"Seventeen people were injured, 12 must be admitted to a hospital for further treatment while five others were treated in the airport clinic and have been released," Trikora Harjo, general manager of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, told AFP.

Most of the passengers suffered bruises but were conscious and able to walk, he added.

The Airbus A330-200 was not seriously damaged and has been parked at the airport for further investigation, Harjo said.

It was the second turbulence incident involving an Airbus 300-200 in Indonesia this week.

An Etihad Airways flight was hit by "severe and unexpected" turbulence just before landing in Jakarta on Wednesday, leaving 31 passengers injured.

The airline said the turbulence also damaged cabin storage areas on Flight EY474 from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - It could be a case of racial profiling - or doing math in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A noted economics professor was questioned by security after a fellow passenger reported that he was suspicious, scribbling intently on a notepad in what appeared to be cryptic code.

The pilot quickly determined that "the female passenger's concerns are not valid," American Airlines spokesman Casey Norton told AFP on Sunday.

According to media reports, Guido Menzio - an Italian with olive skin and dark curly hair - was travelling to give a talk when the woman next to him on the American Eagle flight from Philadelphia to Syracuse told the crew she was ill.

After the plane returned to the gate and the woman disembarked, she reported that her real reason for wanting to turn back was that she was concerned about Menzio's behavior.


Menzio met with airline agents and security, who said he was suspected of "terrorism." The professor showed them that his scribbles were, in fact, a differential equation.

The flight took off after a delay of about an hour.

Menzio is a theoretical macroeconomist at the University of Pennsylvania, according to his faculty profile.

Last year, he won the Carlo Alberto Medal for Best Italian Economist Under 40.

Menzio told the Washington Post in an email that "it is hard not to recognize in this incident, the ethos of (Donald) Trump's voting base", in a reference to the presidential hopeful's anti-Islam, anti-immigration rhetoric.

The Republican candidate has advocated banning Muslims from entering the United States, building a border wall and deporting illegal immigrants.

Norton would not comment on whether reports of suspicious passengers have increased recently, saying only such complaints "happen from time to time." Last month, a student in California was removed from a Southwest Airlines flight after he spoke on the phone in Arabic.

Singapore Airlines plane in near-collision at South Korea's Incheon airport: Reports

SINGAPORE - A Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane was involved in a near-collision with a Korean Air jet at Incheon International Airport in Seoul last Thursday (May 5), local media reported.

Disaster was narrowly averted when an air traffic controller ordered SQ16, which was bound for San Francisco, to make an emergency stop after EK929, which was headed for the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, unexpectedly taxied near an intersection on the runway without permission.

SQ16, which had reportedly been travelling at between 90 and 100 kmh as it was accelerating for take-off, shredded its tyres during the braking process.

The two planes were about 1.7km apart when both came to a complete stop, according to the Korea IT Times.

There were 186 people onboard SQ16, while KE929 was carrying 188 passengers.

SQ16's departure was reportedly delayed for about 19 hours due to the repairs on its badly-damaged tyres.

KE929, meanwhile, was diverted back to the apron and took off about two hours after the incident. Its pilots were said to have ignored instructions from the air traffic controller.

According to a Korea Times report, South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is investigating and is expected to release its report in two or three weeks.

The Straits Times has contacted SIA and is awaiting its response.
