I know some whole villages of vnmese families send their daughters to work as ktv girls because the so-called agent told them their daughters only do simple tasks like serve drinks, chit chat, sing karaoke etc with customer but not going out for ST/LT session with customers. The money is so good that they choose to believe it because they are simply too poor, perhaps they give it a blind eye as long their daughters send money back to them. Only those families who are better off than the average are spared and chose to marry their daughters off as soon they turn 19-21 which are the ages just ripe enough for them to get married in their perspective, so to speak. Their average is likely to include those who are in debt, poverty striken etc.
Just like you narrated, once they know there is fast way to get money they will start to spend extraordinarily and gamble like tomorrow never comes. And their attitude changes as if they are very rich. Most probably they will start to show off by buying new motorbikes, renovating their houses, installing big speakers at home etc. Once they are short of money they will ask the daughter to go work again until their daughters are barred from entering the desired destination. At this point of time, probably they will resume their low profile and previous life. However, the cycle is vicious.
The problem probably lies with their culture and mindset. You just can't let them know there is a fast way to earn money, else the demons in their will be released, once again.
Just my 2c.
