Founder of famous Hill Street Fried Kway Teow stall dies

The founder of Hill Street Fried Kway Teow, Ng Chang Siang, has died at the age of 71.

Ng passed away on Tuesday (15 May) morning, according to a Facebook post by his son Ng Yeow Kiat.

“As many of you know, he has been suffering from ALS for some time now. We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless,” he wrote. ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a form of degenerative motor neuron disease.

Famous for its char kway teow, the late Ng’s stall made it to American celebrity chef’s Anthony Bourdain’s wishlist when he was planning his Singapore hawker-inspired Bourdain Market food hall in New York.

Makansutra founder KF Seetoh paid tribute to the late hawker in a Facebook post, recalling the time Ng taught him how to make char kway teow.

“He taught me how to make cha kway teow saying “(I) dunno how to teach, see whatever and ask any questions’. I will always remember his ways,” said Seetoh.

“Thank you Mr Ng, rest in peace and may the heavens above welcome you back with warm open arms.”
