There is a bit of history on riel mainly due to internal and VN invasion, google and u can get the answer. KHR is the official currency but locals still prefer USD. Riel is just a piece of paper when outside Cambodia. Locals will take 1 USD = 4000 KHR but some malls/places/banks will take different rates, around 1 USD = 3800 KHR.
