On Haikou/Hainan - that is one of the earliest example of a fabulous mongering paradise lost (Dongguan being the latest) and the Chinese Government resolve.
Seems practically overnight, and it's now just a VERY expensive enclave for the rich PRC family to spend their winters at. I mean, we're talking about hotel rates at OVER US$1,000/day high season etc.
Friends just came back from there recently and they couldn't stop moaning about how it's now just a barren and over-priced desert for their night activities; ended up they actually did play golf everyday!
