I also advocate same but you should try telling this concept to those people that had been pickpocketed or robbed and lost all their $$$ in 1 shot cause they brought out everything, I am sure they will offer you a very healthy debate
On the contrary most of this in-house hotel staff petty thieves will never target your big items such as laptop or tablets as it is too obvious liao, if we lose it we sure to make a very big hoo-ha and call the police in as well, which means they can be caught easily since they are working there and end of the road for them.
That's why they are very smart to always take a bit from the $$$ and never all so that it is not noticeable and we may start thinking we ourselves might have misplaced it, like I have only 5 pieces of S$2 in my loose change pouch and they took only 3 pieces, my friend had more usd1K and lost about 4 pieces of the usd100 notes
and they can keep on doing this forever if nobody ever got proof.
Talk about friends, this other samster that lost the $$$ is on extremely close talking terms with practically everybody in that hotel cause thats his usual habit in every hotel we stay e.g. give tips & such, unfortunately not my habit cause I tends to keep a low profile, but in the end still lost his $$$
I think most of the people here knows him & met him before too but I rather not reveal names ^_^ (pls dun speculate who hor)
Nowadays I always tell people, if you really want to leave $$$ in the room at least make sure you have a locked luggage, if you want to bring everything please make sure you split your $$$ and never take out your actual wallet in public.
This is why I am always super paranoid, kiasu and kiasi when I travel, never take for granted and does not matter to me if got laughed at or made fun of, better to be safe than sorry
