Hungry Ghost Festival is commonly celebrated in Sillypore but in Batam, for so many years I cheong during the ghost month. I barely see anyone is praying on the road side or any feeling that the Chinese family is praying when I stayed at a rented house where the area are mostly chinese. I only see praying in temples when I visited but I do not know whether they are praying for the Hungry Ghost…..

Just a note. All these items that are auction off goes to the funds for charity, or rituals for the " good brothers", and other expenses. Yes, these big bosses buy these items for a few reasons, some is for show off, some is for doing good work, some is hoping for "good fortune".... as the name speak for it slf " black gold", fortune pot", etc...
believe me, I seen before, that sometimes, those who bid for these items does make it big the following year, or the year before, and they "donate these money" for helping others or in thanks tot he good brothers.
Yes, it is colourful, to see, and participate.
As for Batam, living here for years, 7th month may not be as colourful as Singapore, but the Chinese here DO PRAY, especially the day before 7th month and the last day. Even the malays also know, and many of them do respect the Chinese praying.
I guess the people here have a better understanding of each other, unlike those who tries to impose their views and values on others.
