Do you love your parents?
 

Hi guys, it's Friday night and I am spending it keyboarding here alone :( Newbie threadstarter, so give some face la, ya?

I haven't seen any threads talking about our own families, and specifically our parents.

So my question for all my brothers and sisters here is.. Is it wrong to not love your parents?

We have been taught by multiple sources that parental love can be more powerful than romantic love, and is considered the strongest love next to perfect love, God's love.

I am not going to qualify my question in anyway, so you can respond however you see fit. If you guys are interested, I could share a bit of my own experiences.. to where I am today.

Before I go, here's a little something that caught my attention..

both my mum & dad passed away within 1 year.. am a orphan now..
so to those who still have parents with you, do spent more time with them before you regrets..

Kidship is most precious in the world. Any relationship we can anytime cut off, only family ties cannot be cut off as it's our parents give us a life, we r their flesh & blood. Even through I'm not born in a rich family, but I nvr left starved, feel very blessful from the love & warmth I receive from them.

Do love ur parents & spend time with them, most of d time, they juz wan to c u r fine or listen to ur voice, they already feel more than satisfy. If hv any misunderstanding with them, try to clear the misunderstanding & sort it out when they're still alive so tat no regret. Parents & children dun hv overnite grudge (ge ye chou). This precious kidship only for this life, we may not meet next life. (you jin sheng, mei lai shi).

Do treasure them more when they r still alive.;)

This song always move me to tears especially this year cos my dad passed away early this year. Now he is gone i regretted not spending more time with him when he is still around. What they need is someone to listen and talk to. So dun make excuses that you are busy with work. I still have my mum so nowadays i will try to make time for her. Maybe having dinner or watching TV together. Don't wait until it's too late.

I hear you. Though are you suggesting abandoned children should still love their parents? Seems a tad overidealistic.

Haha, I'm not, I'm not.

My original question didn't provide any background whatsoever anyway.

If my parents ill-treated me and didn't care for me too much while I was growing up, for whatever reason, why should I have to love them back?

If a child was abandoned and never felt familial love before, why should he be obligated to love his parents who have shown a lack of sense of responsibility, foresight, and even morality?

just rmb... everyone in the world can turn their back against you but your parents definitely wouldnt do so. In fact, i think if situation arises, they might even sacrifice their lives for their children(not i anyhow say, alot of similar news happen before already), so just a reminder for ts and fellow samster bro/sis, always cherish your family...coz the chance to be family is destined to be just this life time, once chance used up.. you cried and beg also no more already. Its a hard truth. Love your parents ok?

Alright. Maybe I am just a little confused at the moment.

Again, loving somebody is not necessarily the same as liking somebody.

your parents are perhaps one of the few people that will be with you in hard times.

not your wife , not your gf, not your friends....:)

but having said that, i have seen my share of bad parenthood.

Bro how you are here today and what you had or have at present is all because of your parents.What I can say is no matter what ...they are still your parents.To be able to forgive you will live a meaningfull life.Without them we wont be in this world.

I can think of a lot of parents who treat their children like shit, and who in return deserve to be treated like shit by these very same children.

While I am not too keen to enter into a discussion about religion..

I have no problems respecting elders who earned it. There are some elderly who, despite their age, are no role models for anybody and thus, don't deserve any respect.

how bad or worst they do is them who'll come visiting my world
you as a young person should just do your part in respecting them even they're role models or not
if you really can't do that just walk away
it's better to walk away than showing disrespect to the elders

Thank you for starting this thread, I suppose it does take some courage to do so as the general public would frown at your question: "Is it wrong to not love your parents?"
And to all the brothers and sisters here who have lost their parents, my deepest condolences to you and your family :(



If we believe that there are good people out there in the world, you must also believe that there are bad people. If one would think that this world is filled with only good people then you are a naive little kid in a grown up's body. If there are good people, then there are good parents. The flip side of the coin is also true - bad parents exist.



I guess the ultimate question here is, will you have to still love your bad parent(s) unconditionally if they did wrong to you?



For example, your colleagues or university friends could talk about how their virginity was given to a charming young boy in a nice romantic night but you could only keep quiet because your virginity was stolen from you when you were too young and too weak to defend yourself while your father was pumping you hard and all your mum did was watch and pretended nothing ever happened.



Could you still love your parents :confused:



For sure, not everyone will have this chance of being abused, raped, publicly humiliated or murdered by their own parents, but back to the question: "is it wrong to NOT love your parents"?



How about I ask my own question instead?

I think my previous responses in this thread has already given people a glimpse of my worldview.

If your parents wronged you intentionally, and any reasonable person could see that it has damaged you , and they have made no effort to right the wrong they have committed, then ..

Sure. You're not obliged to love them.

Haha bro,

It is actually the same question disguised to get an answer in a less guilty manner. With the above question, it is easier to say yes. And if the answer is yes that basically means - no, it is not wrong to not love your parents.
