SIA flight to Istanbul turns back after suicide attack at Turkey’s Ataturk airport

SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight enroute to Istanbul turned back to Singapore after the Istanbul Ataturk international airport was hit by suicide bombings.

SQ392, which departed from Changi Airport's Terminal 3 at 2.01am on Wednesday (Jun 29), was scheduled to arrive in Istanbul at around 7.45am (Istanbul time), according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

At least 36 people were killed and scores wounded after a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, in the latest deadly strike to rock Turkey's biggest city.

An SIA spokesperson confirmed that the flight turned back about five hours after taking off due to the closure of the Istanbul Ataturk airport. The aircraft arrived back in Singapore at about 10.50am.

There were 201 passengers and 14 crew on board the flight, a Boeing 777-200, SIA said.

“Singapore Airlines is saddened by the explosions at the Istanbul airport earlier this morning,” SIA said in a media statement.

Passengers were offered a rescheduled flight to Istanbul, which departed Changi Airport at around 1.35pm. The flight is expected to arrive at Ataturk airport – which has resumed operations – at about 6pm (Istanbul time), SIA said.

Passenger Jimmy Zamani, who was on board SQ392, told Channel NewsAsia that he was asleep on the plane when the pilot announced that the flight would be turning back to Singapore as the Istanbul airport had been hit by explosions.

The 25-year-old described the mood of passengers on the plane as "uncertain" but said that the situation was "as organised as it could be”.

Another passenger, Ms Mia Stanley, said that "everyone was shocked, not even scared - it was kind of a delayed reaction".

Mr Zamani agreed. "Everyone was a bit shocked and there was uncertainty about where we would go. But once we returned, SQ had organised to get us all sorted on the next flight," he said.

However, not all of the 201 passengers on board the original flight chose to board the rescheduled flight. According to SIA, 115 passengers took the flight, along with a new set of crew.

"Some (Turkish) nationals chose to go back (on the next flight) but a lot of us travellers, especially those flying to Athens, decided probably it was not the best to go to an area like that at the moment," Mr Zamani said.

Instead of transiting in Istanbul on his way to Athens from Adelaide, Mr Zamani said that he will take an SIA flight to Athens via a different route. Ms Stanley said that she would take an 11pm flight through Munich instead.

The airline has organised alternative flights, accommodation and flight transfers for those who did not want to fly on the rescheduled SQ392 flight to Istanbul.

In an update on its website, SIA said it will waive all fees for re-booking or re-routing for customers holding confirmed tickets on SIA flights arriving in or departing from Istanbul.

The waiver is valid for tickets issued on or before Wednesday, for travel to or from Istanbul up to Jul 31. The new trip should commence by Aug 31, SIA said, adding that fare top-ups may apply for re-routing.
