BEE HENG | A stall which has been in existence since the 1920s, Bee Heng is one of the hawker stalls from the iconic Glutton’s Square in the 1960s. Their Hokkien popiah ($2.20, minimum order of two) comes with a shredded turnip filling that has a nice crunch even after it being cooked (and soaked) in prawn stock. Compared to the average popiah stall, the filling here is a little more intense.
Other ingredients wrapped in the popiah skin (similar to a crepe) include the standard sweet sauce, chopped eggs and a bit of chopped prawns, bean sprouts and lettuce. Do not miss out on the chilli as it has a noticeable earthy chilli flavour.
In the olden days, they would add pork lard pieces in each roll, but now chunkier-than-usual crispy savoury flour bits are added to the mix as a substitute, a practice of many popiah stalls.
They also sell a pretty good satay ($0.60 each, minimum order of 10) with a choice of chicken, mutton or pork.
Unlike the other stalls at Newton, Bee Heng is one of the few that insist on self-service.
