10. The Kitchen’s Mala Hotpot

Situated within Star Vista, The Kitchen is a food court that houses a great mala xiang guo stall. Avoid long queues at other places and indulge in a savoury bowl of spicy goodness here.

Mala Stir-Fry ($15-$25)

Opting for the usual suspects in the mala stir-fry mix, we had egg noodles, potato and kelp slices along with several bamboo shoots. Comparatively pricier to other mala joints, with vegetables costing $0.80 per 100g onwards, meat at $2.80 and seafood at $3.80, ensure you don’t over-order.

Address: The Star Vista, 1 Vista Exchange Green #02-25/26 Singapore 138617

Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm daily

Looks good

1. Long Qing Restaurant

And finally, the top of my list would be Long Qing restaurant. Priding themselves in various soup bases that are 100% free of MSG and made from scratch, it doesn’t get any better than this.

In addition to their delicious hotpot, their restaurant is decked out in super hip furnishings complete with concrete walls painted thematically and tastefully.

Hot Pot Set ($55 – $65)

For the divided bowl, we selected a mala broth on one side and wild mushrooms on the other. The spicy mala was numbingly satisfying as our meats and vegetables absorbed the spice when dipped into the piping hot soup. The wild mushroom was an excellent palate cleanser as well.

Their luncheon meat ($6.80), potato noodles ($3.80) and crispy beancurd skin rolls ($6.80) are strongly recommended.

Perfect for an intimate dinner setting with your loved ones.

Address: LongQing 隆庆, 18 Hong Kong Street, Singapore 059661

Opening Hours: Tuesday – Sunday (5.30pm – 11pm), Closed on Mondays

126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi (搵到食): Singapore Food Review

“Original Hong Kong road-side style Dim Sum”

126 Dim sum, or Wan Dou Sek (搵到食) in Cantonese, is a brilliant wordplay on the name as well as the street number that this dum sum restaurant is located on. If the owner wasn’t into dim sum, he/she could seriously consider a career in copywriting.

This is probably the most authentic looking Hong Kong style dim sum in Singapore, complete with a burly aunty with permed hair. Other close runner ups include Swee Choon Dim Sum and Victor’s Kitchen. The sheer genius of 126 Eating House dim sum is that it’s open 24 hrs, every single day.

Liu Sha Bao 流沙包 ($3.50). This is possibly the worst Liu Sha Bao (Golden Custard Bun) I have ever eaten. Not flowy at all, just a lump of custard that was made with corn and not even salted egg yolk. Avoid this at all costs.

Another item to avoid is the Xiao Long Bao, which I tried the last time. 126 dim sum’s version is a DRY xiao long bao with no soup inside. Bleh. The Char Siew bao and Har Gaos are pretty good though, as well as the homemade drinks, having extra touches like lemon tea with pomelo fibres.

Overall a decent, casual place to go with friends especially when hungry after midnight. I’d say Swee Choon Dim Sum is still a better choice overall, because their Liu Sha Bao is way better, but expect to pay a little bit more.
