Kin charged with murder

PETALING JAYA: He is married to the sister of seven-year-old murder victim Ho Ping for almost three years, and they have two sons aged one and two, with a third baby on the way.

Yesterday, hawker Kee Lian Kok was charged in a magistrate’s court with the kidnap and murder of the boy, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase in Sungai Sitiawan, Perak, on May 21.

Jointly charged with the 28-year-old man was his 35-year-old Chinese (PRC) national girlfriend, who was listed as unemployed in the charge sheet but was widely reported in the press to be a guest relations officer in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.


Hawker Kee Lian Kok,(right) 28, and his Chinese national girlfriend Su Qiaomei, 35, were jointly charged yesterday with the kidnap and murder of Ho Ping. The body of Ho Ping, seven, was found stuffed in a suitcase in Sungai Sitiawan, Perak, on May 21. The boy's elder sister is married to Kee.

After the charges were read to Kee and Su Qiaomei, who hails from Fujian, he was overheard asking the court interpreter in Mandarin when his case would be heard and whether the matter would be settled faster if he were to enter a plea immediately.

The interpreter then informed him that no plea could be made at the magistrate’s court. (Kidnap and murder cases, which carry the death penalty, are tried in the High Court.)

In the first charge, Kee and Su are accused of kidnapping the boy from his home in Subang Jaya at about 7.30pm on May 18 for a RM500,000 ransom.

A person convicted of kidnap is punishable with death, or life imprisonment and whipping.

The second charge alleged that the couple murdered the boy between 2am and 3am the next day at Ladang Changkat Meranti, Kampung Baru Manjung, in Perak.

There is only one penalty for murder – mandatory death.

When the court interpreter asked if they understood the first charge after she had read it out to them in Mandarin, Kee replied in the affirmative.

Su, however, replied that she did not know what the interpreter had just said.

The interpreter then ticked her off and told her to listen attentively as she read out the charge again.


DISTRAUGHT: Kee’s sister and her husband leaving the courthouse in Petaling Jaya yesterday. Kee and his Chinese-national girlfriend are charged with the kidnap and murder of seven-year-old Ho Ping (inset). Su nodded to the first charge and then to the second charge together with Kee to indicate that they understood the two charges.

After magistrate Maimoonah Aid allowed an application by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad to transfer the case to the Shah Alam High Court, Kee made an unusual request.

He asked to be held in an isolated cell at the Kajang prison, claiming that he suffers from a mental condition that gives him the urge to assault others.

Su also made a request for the Chinese Embassy to be notified of her case, and asked to meet an official. Moments later, the woman claimed that she was innocent and a “victim” in this case.

When this was translated to Maimoonah, the magistrate told Su to reserve her remarks for the High Court.

To Su’s other request, the magistrate said the prosecution would contact the embassy.

As for Kee, the magistrate said he would have to make the necessary applications at the Sungai Buloh prison when he is taken there.

The case will be mentioned at the Shah Alam High Court on June 23.

Outside the courtroom, Kee’s sister was heard yelling qiao po (which means “slut” in Mandarin) at Su as she was being led to the police lock-up.

When met later outside the building, the 20-year-old woman blamed the Chinese national for what had happened.

Kee’s sister, who declined to be named, told newsmen that her brother changed completely ever since he met Su, who frequently asked him for money.
